Beccles on Margaret (formerly known as Worsley on Margaret) is a 1938 “Custom” Queensland Bungalow, as described by the Heritage Advisory Group of the Toowoomba Regional Council; located in East Toowoomba near crest of the range (700 metres above sea level) at the east end of Margaret Street, or Eat Street as it is affectionately referred to by us “locals” because of the many restaurants located in the street. A leisurely 15 minute walk down Margaret or Arthur Street (next parallel street) and through Queens Park and the Botanic Gardens will find you in the CBD. You may wish to take a short break along the way to enjoy a coffee in one of the heritage restaurants and /or browse through one of the many antique shops in town.“Beccles” is the name of a market town located approximately 160 kilometres northeast of London where Bob's forebears, on his mother's side of the family, hailed from.
“What is the origin of the name Beccles?” I hear you ask and why was the spot chosen for a settlement? around 960 AD. The answer lies in the name itself, which means “pasture by the stream”. Standing as it does on the edge of a high cliff ; the position would have appeared to the early settlers as an ideal spot for defence against their enemies, with ample supplies of food to be obtained from the surrounding waters and countryside. Coincidentally, the location of the town of Beccles is somewhat similar to that of Toowoomba – 700 metres ASL on the edge of the Great Dividing Range and the gateway to the Darling Downs.
